National Geographic video on Chotuna

Despite the misinformation that was reported in this video, it was still great press coverage for the Lambayeque Biohistory Project. The article and video misreported the number of female sacrifice victims. In fact, there were only nine female victims and the rest were male or children. Watch the video to see Dr. Haagen Klaus and students Joe Luce and JoEllen Perez in action!

Lambayeque Biohistory Project

As part of the Lambayeque Biohistory Project I spent 7-weeks traveling and working in Peru with with Dr. Haagen Klaus, and fellow students Jerel Bartholomew, Joe Luce, JoEllen Perez, and Kat Phillpotts. I was personally in Peru from July 1 through August 16, 2009. Dr. Klaus and Joe and JoEllen arrived a few weeks earlier. We spent time working and playing in Lima, Ferreñafe, Chiclayo, Lambayeque, Chotuna, Puerto Eten, Eten, Trillijo, Zaña, and more.

Hello all,

This blog is a wonderful asset to our program. As many of you know, I am a social anthropologist who teaches in this program. This school year I am on leave to write and will spend most of my time in Berlin and in Bolivia/Peru, where we have some students working. We have a good program started here at UVU and I encourage all the students to take full advantage of it, and to look for opportunities to begin your own research project. Both you and the program are enriched when you are actively exploring questions of interest to you concerning human kind. These questions connect you with the anthropological literature and a community of thinkers in a deep way, as well as make your education richer and more interesting.

Though I will not be on campus, I am very interested in the progress of all the students and look forward to learning more about you. Occasionally I will post here updates from my work.

A note on the side bar of the blog.

On the side bar of the blog we've make a search feature for you to search previous posts as well as the links provided through the blog. Below that we have an archive of previous posts so you can view them by the date they were posted.

Then we've made a list of web resources for anthropology students at UVU.  This includes several links to UVU websites that may be of interest as well as many outside of the university that may be of use in your studies.  We will write another post soon to introduce members to those links as they can be very useful for general study. The primary link of interest may be the club's facebook group.  If you are on facebook but haven't joined the group yet please consider doing so.  These links also include portals to academic journal databases like JSTOR and AnthroSource.  Once you link on these links you will be asked for your UV Link ID and password.  These databases are invaluable resources for searching for articles.



Below the resource links we've created direct links to archives for various academic journals.  If you click on one of these links you will have to sign in with your UV Link ID and password.  Although there are a few journals out there on included in the list and that UVU doesn't have access to you can always use interlibrary loan to order those articles--its free.


We then have made a brief list of possible professional anthropology associations that you may consider becoming a member of.  They offer many resources that can help you if you are interested in pursuing grad school.  There are many other associations you may want to look into, those listed on the blog are just some of the more popular ones for the interests many UVU students share.


Under those links we've created two news feeds from the New York Times and other various sources about stories that directly relate to anthropology.  Check them out if sometime looks interesting to you.


We then have provided a list of different blogs by anthropologists and student anthropologists about the discipline.  They are in descending order by the time they were updated.  Some of these blogs are a little better than others but they are all worth just taking a look at.

An introduction on how to use this blog

Hello fellow anthropology students. Thank you for participating in the UVU Anthropology Club. Our goal is to assist you in your studies. On this blog you can post questions you may have that other students may be able to answer.  For example, if you have a question about Malinowski or the Kula ring, here is the place to ask it.  Hopefully a fellow member of the club will be able to point you in the right direction.  You may also write posts about general interests you may have in anthropology that you feel could use feedback from other students.  So if you'd like to draw the attention of other students to a particular news article, journal article, or book please do so.  We will also be posting club announcements about activities that the club will be sponsoring on the blog as those opportunities arise.  If you have any possible activities to announce you are more than welcome to write a post about those as well.  As a club we are in our infancy, so the key to making the club and this blog a success is participation from the members.  Please share your thoughts, questions, and announcements.
